Natural Gas in the World 2012 (Released - 24 octobre 2012)
The 2012 Edition of Natural Gas in the World by CEDIGAZ was released on 24 October.
Building on CEDIGAZ's unique natural gas statistical database, this 170-page study, published since 1983,
provides an in-depth analysis of the latest developments in the gas markets along with the most complete set of statistical data
on the whole gas chain covering close to 130 countries.

The natural gas industry has returned to sustained expansion worldwide, despite economic uncertainties and competition from coal
>> Natural gas proved reserves reach an all time high

Proved natural gas reserves in the world
After a strong growth in 2010, natural gas proven reserves reached the record level of 199 593 bcm
as of January 2012. The biggest reserves additions were recorded in Russia (+ 2 676 bcm), in Iran (+ 530 bcm), in the US (+ 290 bcm) thanks to sustained shale gas expansion.
>> Natural gas production back to sustained growth

World balance of natural gas production
After strong variations seen over the past two years due to cyclical economic reasons, the natural gas industry is back to a sustained long-term growth.
Worldwide natural gas production has been particularly strong in 2011. World marketed production, which accounted for 80% of gross production, climbed 2.8% in 2011
and returned to the rapid growth trajectory observed in the decade preceding the 2009 recession. These remarkable achievements confirm
the expected overall trend of gas expansion worldwide.
>> International gas trade up 4.3%

The international gas trade grew 4.3% to just over 1030 bcm in 2011, in line with the strong growth observed in the past decade.
In 2011, the inter-regional trade surged 10% to 439 bcm, while intra-regional flows rather stagnated at a volume of 591 bcm.
This trend was driven by the continued rise in LNG deliveries, especially from the Middle East to Asia-Oceania.

>> Natural gas consumption: strong growth in Asia, slowdown in Europe

Evolution of natural gas consumption (2006-2011)
World gas consumption also increased significantly but at a more moderate rate of 2.0% in 2011, as a result
of various regional factors. The dynamism of gas developments in Asia-Oceania, notably in China, was still the main driver of consumption growth.
In contrast, European gas demand was negatively affected by the economic slowdown and the better competitiveness of coal in a context of low CO2 prices.
>> Widening regional gas prices differentials

Divergence of international gas prices
Pricing differentials between the three main regional markets (United States, Europe, and Japan) have accentuated
further, reflecting different and specific regional market patterns, which are a long way off the idea of a fully global market.
>> Bright perspectives for natural gas
In the medium term, gas consumption can be expected to accelerate upward alongside the expansion of the international trade.
